Digger: Can Tom Cruise save its Oscars Campaign?
Academy Watch hosts Bo and Sam discuss the Oscar chances of DIGGER, one of the biggest box office bombs in recent memory.
The latest episode of Academy Watch has dropped, and this episode the boys tackle the incredibly divisive Digger, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s latest film, which takes aim at the systems leading us into an inevitable climate catastrophe.
Tom Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon whose negligence and hubris has created an international incident that will end millions of lives and change the world forever. But instead of holding him accountable for his actions, the governments of the world work with Digger to try and save face first, and save lives as a potential side-benefit.
The film’s secrets are best kept until the spoiler section of the podcast, but suffice to say critics and audiences have ranged in opinion on the film; some lauding it as a masterpiece, some laughing it off as trash, and some have fallen in the middle, like our contributor Sean Wilson did in this review.
Apart from dissecting the themes of the film, Bo and Sam also rate its Oscar chances and even make a wish on its behalf.
