Episode 255: Harold and Maude & Lars and the Real Girl

Episode 255 of Frame to Frame is here, and this time the relatively orthodox couple of Andy Williams and Sean Wilson are talking ‘unorthodox relationships’ in cinema.

When reading the synopsis of each of Harold and Maude (1971) and Lars and the Real Girl (2007), it’s easy to imagine a world where the films lean into the absurdity of their premises and become bad comedies. Thankfully, Hal Ashby and Craig Gillespie, respectively, treat the content with a lot of heart, respect and good humour. The result: 2 damn fine movies.

Perhaps we should have anticipated that the New Hollywood Era and the year 2007 would have produced such quality.

Andy and Sean navigate the tightrope these films walked with their typical elegance; including Sean sneaking in a trademark Jimmy Stewart impersonation. The man cannot be stopped, and why would we want him to?
