The Battle of Algiers @ 60 Years Old

Apartheid, Colonialism, Guerrilla Warfare against the might of an Empire; The Battle of Algiers is a searingly important film to this day.

The latest MovieVersaries episode is live now and in terms of ‘Capital I Important’ films, you’ll rarely see one that fits the bill better.

Hosts Bo Nicholson and Ian Buckley dive into the history books with The Battle of Algiers, a film about the pivotal titular battle during the Algerian War of 1954-1962, resulting in Algerians winning their independence from the French. 

A first time watch for both hosts, they expected a “homework movie”, but this is anything but that.  It’s propulsive and moving from start to finish, with a unique shooting style reminiscent of the authenticity achieved in documentary and also Italian Neorealism and pulsing with a score by the legendary Ennio Morricone.
